Exhibition Text
skin between your teeth is an exploration of the relationship between the body and the spaces it occupies–we break open the body and turn it inside out, spilling it onto the gallery floor. Through this obliteration and reconstruction, we attempt to embrace the way horror and queerness have been intertwined throughout history and satirize it, play with it, and exaggerate it. Informed by horror media like Carrie and Interview with a Vampire along with camp horror in the drag and ballroom worlds, we recreate and reimagine the typically serene area of the home–the dining room–and reframe elements of the home through a lens of the grotesque. Along with this, skin between your teeth is a love letter to “craft”–using almost entirely ceramics and textiles, we seek to make space for these underrepresented methods in the art world.
